SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is all about figuring out where your web pages rank on search engine results pages and then improving those ranking positions. A business that knows people are searching for specific topics related to them can tailor their content to make sure they’re an authoritative source of information, and in the long term improve their ranking to get more visibility online. For example, you may want to focus on a keyword and move from ranking 11th to a front-page ranking (that is, a ranking between 1st and 6th or 8th).

Here are 6 ways to optimize the search engine rankings for your chosen keywords:

  1. Revise the original blog with these SEO keywords in mind (which is called “on-page SEO”)
  2. Create an updated version of the blog for the current month and year (because Google likes timely, up to date content)
  3. Revise other blogs to link to these topics in smart ways to optimize your content to rank well on search engines (aka backlinking inside your own website. This helps Google figure out which pages are most important to you. It should improve your bounce rates since people might stay on your site longer reading relevant content)
  4. Optimize meta descriptions and URLs around this topic
  5. Try to achieve a “featured snippet” (the most relevant answer to a question which will be featured in a breakout box on the top of the front search page)
  6. Claim, verify and update your Google My Business listing regularly. (Did you know you can treat it a bit like social media and add your latest business updates to it?)

If you don’t measure it, you can’t improve it. Investment in organic search content is a long-term strategy. By tracking the performance of your website content on search engine results pages, you can actively work to improve your website rankings, rather than trust that the algorithm will reward you.

There’s no way to generate leads or conversions if nobody can find you! When looking at keyword rankings, you’re looking at search keywords where a certain page on your website shows up at positions 1, 2, and so on, on that keyword’s search results page. Any Google ranking from 1-7 will probably show up on the front page, with 8-10 being ‘maybes’ depending on ads. From 11 onwards, you’re on page 2 for that keyword, which means you’re probably not being seen.

Improving your Search Engine Ranking Position can sound like a monstrous task, but don’t fear – it’s actually quite achievable if you have the data-driven insights in front of you.

STEP 1: Start with keyword research using Digivizer’s Search Queries table. 

  1.  Identify where you’re already winning. Use Search Queries and sort by Clicks or (CTR) to see what keywords are driving traffic to your website.
  2.  Identify areas where your content needs to be revisited in your SEO strategy. Use Search Queries and sort by impressions, to identify search terms where you rank in the top 10 but aren’t seeing click-throughs.

STEP 2: Find the opportunities in keywords. 

Where your website is hovering around 3-15  in the rankings, see these as  opportunities to build and extend and build more relevant content to match those terms on your website. Use free-form search on Search Queries to look up keywords you want to go after, and design a targeted search content strategy.

With all the puzzling acronyms in digital marketing, it’s easy to mistake these similar terms. SEM and SEO are often used interchangeably but each term means something very different. 

In broad terms, SEM is an overall marketing strategy, while SEO is a tactic you can employ to execute that strategy. Essentially search engine marketing (SEM) is the umbrella term for everything you’re doing involving marketing your website on search engines, while search engine optimization (SEO) is one of those things you’re doing. SEO typically represents organic content.  SEM very much includes your paid search strategy.  

SEO affects SEM. For example, if content marketing is part of your search strategy, you’ll definitely need to use SEO. Good SEO delivers you higher volume of organic web traffic.  Good SEO also lowers your cost per outcome of your SEM paid search ads, as the terms you are going after are likely to map closer to the content you have on your website.

Search Console is a free web service from Google that provides useful insights about your website’s performance on Google Search.

If you haven’t yet set up Search Console, you are missing out on a wealth of information about which keywords are driving traffic to your business’ website.
